I am a committed coffee addict. Sometimes I feel it gets the better of me, so I try to make a real effort to cut back during the day. A cup of freshly brewed tea offers a mellow pick –me-up without the caffeine and acidity. In the Kundalini Yoga tradition, there is a ritual of drinking a cup of spiced tea that offers both comfort and zing. Many companies offer bagged tea with similar spices, but I can’t take the caffeine from the black tea leaves that is often mixed with it.
Here is a simple recipe using spices you may have in your cupboard:
Simple Recipe, per cup:
4 Black Peppercorns
4 Whole Green Cardamom Pods
½ inch slice of fresh Ginger
½ Cinnamon Stick
3 Whole Cloves
I put the above in a tea strainer and let steep in a cup of hot water for at least 7 minutes. Add some nut, hemp, soy or cow’s milk and a touch of honey or agave for sweetener.
If you need a little extra punch you can add a bag of black tea to the brew. Besides being delicious and aromatic, each of the spices have healing properties.
Black Pepper purifies the blood, Cardamom and Ginger promote digestion, Cinnamon promotes bone health, and cloves calm the nervous system.
